How to Copy a Garment You Love

27 August 2019 by Danielle Leave a Comment

Yifen’s joyful new dress

Yifen recently took part in one of the most popular short courses we offer – the two day course: How to Copy a Garment You Love.

Over a total of 12 hours; students learn how to assess their original garment to draft a pattern off it – without having to pull the original garment apart! The second component of the course is having students make a toile of their pattern so that we can test the pattern that has been created and make any adjustments or corrections to pattern.  This short course is a great introduction to pattern drafting.

Original dress

In the August 2019 course, Yifen copied a fun party dress that featured angled seams, ruffles and gathering (no easy feat for the copying process) and we are so proud of her results!  Yifen only learnt to sew this year in our Sewing Basics for Beginners 3 Week Course. She has achieved an amazing result with her copied dress – we love it more than the original! Plus she now has a pattern for her favourite dress and can create many different versions. We hope they all bring her as much joy as the fabulous zig zag version.

Bra Made In Class

10 January 2019 by Danielle

This beautiful white underwire bra was made by a student in our Bra Making Course.

In our course students learn to make a bra that has multiple cup pattern pieces (this means more support), wires, hooks and eyes, adjustable straps and full (wider) band. We provide details of wonderful suppliers for gorgeous bra fabrics and laces during booking and advise of the pattern that students need to purchase.

To accommodate different skill levels, you can take this course over 16 or 8 hours!

  • 16 hour course students make a toile bra first and learn how to undertake pattern adjustments before cutting into their fabulous fabric. The course starts two weeks before the 8 hour option –
  • 8 hour course students join after the first two workshops, they choose their size based on measurements and learn to make a beautiful bra.

Amazing A Line Skirts

30 May 2018 by Danielle Leave a Comment

Over 5 hours these gorgeous students made their own A Line skirts. The skirt waist is finished with a facing, they learnt to insert a lapped zip, use the overlockers, sew back waist darts and hem. This is the workshop that they did – The Simple A Line Skirt.

Sewing Lessons:

This photo demonstrates two things: 1) Always press your projects.  The skirt on the left hasn’t had a final press and looks terrible. 2) Don’t ask a cheeky ten year old boy to take a photo of your matching A Line skirts!
