There are no pre-requisites. We don’t expect you to have ever used a sewing machine before.
Level 1 workshops are perfect for students that have completed our Sewing Basics for Beginners. At this level you will be expected to know about adjusting stitch width and length, and understand how to sew at seam allowance.
In level 1 workshops we introduce just a couple of new skills.
At this level your can expect:
- Simple garments and accessories that have just a few pattern pieces.
- We will thoroughly cover straight grain and pattern markings.
- You might learn to use an overlocker to finish straight and simple seams.
- You could be taught invisible zips and centred regular zips.
- Suggested fabrics will include stable woven fabrics.
Level 2 workshops are for students that have made a couple of simple garments with some success previously. At this level you may have made a pair of pyjama pants, boxer shorts, or simple skirts.
You will learn several new skills in a Level 2 workshop.
At this level your can expect:
- Garments with several pattern pieces.
- You should know your straight grain and pattern markings, but your teacher will check these with you.
- You could learn a trickier application like a lapped regular zip.
- Double ended darts.
- Working on the fabric bias.
- You’ll probably use an overlocker.
- Suggested fabrics will include knit fabrics and woven with drape.
- Garments might also combine different types of fabrics.
Level 3 workshops are our trickiest and most challenging. Students that have made a several garments and understand pattern markings will be most suited. At this level workshops are at a fast-past and you will get the most if you take some time for homework in between classes.
At this level your can expect:
- Advanced garments with many pattern pieces.
- You will know your straight grain and pattern markings, your teacher will briefly check these with you.
- Pattern alterations and drafting may be included.
- Suggested fabrics could include satins and silk.
- Garments might also combine different types of fabrics.
- You may learn to make specialty skills like bodice boning, making underwire bras and tailoring.
