Creating A High-Quality Sewing Space – step 8

Do you want to create the perfect sewing room?

This is the eighth of eight steps.

9. Don’t Forget Your Inspirations

It’s never a bad idea to focus on how you’re going to be inspired throughout the sewing process. You should look to make the most of your sewing space, which can include small sources of inspiration such as colours, shapes, or even a plant or two.

Inspiration and motivation can come from the beautiful space, beautiful decor, photos of your muses or drawings of your own ideas.

8. Use Wall Shelving for the Fabric

The fabric has to be organised the right way and this is where wall shelving comes into the equation. It can be used to position and store the fabric without having it get in the way. A simple 6 inch shelf can help out as it is set up above the cutting table.

You don’t want it to be out of your reach as that makes it tough to move around.

Store everything in clear bins, so you know where everything is.

Clear bins are great. Being able to see your fabric will keep you inspired, encourage you to use it and reduce the risk of buying fabric or habby that you don’t need.

7. Create a Proper Workspace

Yes, the workspace includes the cutting table and sewing desk and it has to be perfect. You want to set it up in a way where it’s not impossible to use and allows you to move around freely.

A good-sized cutting table is going to make your life simpler while developing a proper sewing space.

Linen connoisseurs Tow and Line explain that “you should have enough space to sew on throughout the process and that is why most end up going with a serger and sewing machine for their setup. Your work space will be your creative hub, so plan to have all the room you need when you set it up.”

Creating A High-Quality Sewing Space – step 5

5. Organise Your Sewing Patterns

Sewing patterns are essential when it comes to understanding how various pieces are put together. A good filing cabinet can be useful as you try to figure things out, including where to place detailed manila envelopes.

Clear sleeves are great for quick visual sorting of your patterns.

You want to have the filing cabinet neatly organised from top to bottom because this can make it easier to sift through different patterns during the process.

If you don’t (yet) have enough patterns to fill a sewing cabinet, you could use display books, or folders. Individual folders organised however you like! Pants, tops, next to make, holiday wardrobe, cat clothes, etc.

This is the fourth of eight steps.

Keep the Essentials Nearby

If you are going to be sewing, you don’t want to have to run across the room to pick up essential items. They should all be within reach while sitting at the sewing machine. This is why most end up buying in a separate metal box, which can be set up nearby on a stand or on a shelf.

You should also do the same for your sewing guides/books. Keep everything on a separate shelf that’s within reach.

Also keep the manuals for your sewing machine and overlocker with all your sewing books, close by your machine. You can easily refer to them when you want to rethread your overlocker, or double check you’ve setup everything to sew a buttonhole.

Shelving close by

For a quick money saving tip, the team from Direct Appliance Rentals explain you don’t have to purchase everything yourself. They explain “if your sewing plans aren’t long-term, consider renting larger items like furniture to keep costs low. This means you can spend more on quality sewing resources. With less hassle and time spent searching, you can focus your energy on your craft instead.”

You should have these guides in a safe spot, so you are not left in a tough spot. This is something people end up not knowing what to do or how to manage the situation while planning.

Creating A High-Quality Sewing Space – step 3

This is the third of eight steps.

3. Organise Everything

You will have to be organised during the process. It’s not easy to manage different items at the same time including fabric, machines, and threads. This is why you want to have enough space to store these items in an organised manner.

Storage

You should be looking to invest in a full-fledged organiser as soon as you get the opportunity to do so. If you’re on a budget, you can bring in a small-sized metal organiser for the task.

At Thread Den we love to re-purpose things, clear glass vases are a great visual way to store your threads. Nostalgic tins are adorable and come in so many different sizes – you can have individual ones for different categories (buttons, scissors, feet accessories…). But you also can’t beat clear plastic organisers to see what’s inside. We also have an ironing board where the covers all off, you can then put in retail shelf hangers. It’s the perfect sewing room peg board for all your tools.

This is the second of eight steps.

2. Focus on the Lighting

The lighting has to be good enough for you to enjoy sewing and see everything in front of you. You want a sewing machine to be highlighted under the light, which can be combined with a separate floor lamp for maximum efficiency. This can make it easier for you while sewing.

You can play around with the lamps and place them in strategic spots to gain full vision.

You can also upgrade the bulb in your sewing machine to a LED bright light bulb. They use less power and provide a brighter whiter light.

On Friday pop back when we’ll focus on organising.

Do you want to create the perfect sewing room?

A lot of people assume it requires quite a bit of money to build a high-grade sewing room. However, this isn’t the case and sometimes even with a smaller budget, it’s possible to create an impressive sewing room worthy of praise.

In eight steps, this series is going to illustrate what’s required to make sure you create a beautiful sewing room that is going to allow you to sew without trouble.

Even something small is good enough when put together the right way.

If you’re ready to create a creative and inspiring sewing space, here’s what you need to do.

Creating a quality sewing room

1. Plan the Layout

When it comes to sewing, you want to understand what’s required and how you’re going to remain efficient during the process. It’s not easy to think about everything, even if you are in love with sewing.

You have to plan out the details including the ironing board, sewing desk, cutting table, and how all of these items work together to create the perfect layout for your space.

The ironing board is a good place to begin as it should be put in front of a window. The reason for this is simple, you don’t want the room heating up during the warmer months because the iron isn’t being aired out.

The amount of condensation created can be quite surprising.

Ironing in front of window

The iron is going to make things intolerable, which is why a window should be nearby, so you can let in the cool breeze from time to time. It’s also nice to iron with a window in front of you.

At Thread Den, we put our ironing boards on top of shelving to maximise space and provide a nifty storage spot.

If the sewing room is being put in the kitchen or dining room then it’s important to have the right storage space. Something like a bench with internal storage options should go a long way to get the job done.

On Wednesday pop back when we’ll focus on lighting.
